Packing for a Trip to Maui

Because Maui is a tropical environment surrounded by water, you’ll need to be specific with the items you pack. Forgetting an important item could mean having to do without or trying to buy it on the island. Download our Ultimate Maui Packing Guide for a complete list of everything you will need!

Important Items to Pack for a Maui Vacation

Light Clothing

Since the climate on Maui is typically hot and humid, you will want to stick to light, breathable materials. This is also the perfect occasion to grab the Hawaiian shirt that’s been hiding in the back of your closet. Many locals wear them as well, so you won’t have to worry about looking like the tacky tourist.

Sunscreen, Hats & Sunglasses

Being out in the tropical sun all day, it’s important to protect your skin and eyes from UV damage. Bring plenty of sunscreen and make sure you have sunglasses with you at all times. A wide-brim hat not only looks great, it’s also useful for keeping rogue rays at bay.

Sandals and Sneakers

While sandals and flip-flops will be sufficient for beaches, shops and restaurants, if you explore the more rural parts of Maui, be sure to bring shoes suitable for hiking.

Light Jacket

Although the weather on Maui is usually warm and sunny, it can get chilly in the evenings. The humidity from the ocean can amplify the chill in the air when the sun goes down, so be sure to bring a light jacket for evenings.

Itinerary

If you’re a planner, you’ve likely got the entire trip mapped out from restaurants to daily activities. Print out boarding passes, pre-purchased tickets for excursions and any other documents you'll need during your trip. Not having to find a confirmation number or worrying about your phone's battery life lasting while you try to find important information will make your vacation even easier.

A final piece of advice: pack light. You don’t need 4 pairs of shoes and 3 outfits for each day. Due to the island’s laid-back nature, most places adhere to a casual dress code. You can easily wear the same outfit to dinner that you wore sightseeing or to the beach. Make packing a breeze by downloading our free Maui packing list.
