Maui has an abundance of delicious native foods grown and harvested from the island, and many local restaurants use these ingredients in innovative dishes. To experience fresh island food like a local, visit one of Maui's farmers markets. They’re a wonderful way to spend a few hours, take in the sights and smells, and learn from the vendors. So do a little exploration and treat yourself to some of the best food available.
The following are five top farmers markets to visit when you’re in Maui:
The Upcountry Farmers Market has attracted vendors and shoppers for more than 40 years, making it the island's oldest market. You'll find an abundance of locally grown foods, including coconuts, macadamia nuts, freshly caught fish, coffee as well as tropical flowers, plants and trees. If you get hungry while you’re there, try some raw, vegan, Thai, or Indian foods.
Located at Kulamalu Town Center just off state Route 37 near Long’s Drugs, you can find the market next to the football field. It’s open on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. rain or shine.
This 40-acre farm is owned by a mother and son team that sells bananas, greens, zucchini and squash varieties, papayas, avocados and more. You can also find local flowers, including water lilies and orchids.
Visit Maui Nui Farm's farmers market every Thursday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s located at 151 Pulehunui Road off Lower Kula Road in Kula, Maui.
3. Queen Ka'ahumanu Center Maui Fresh Farmers Market
You'll find plenty of freshly caught fish and baked goods in the mornings at Maui Fresh Farmers Market. This market is also the ideal spot to sample gourmet foods or buy Maui honey. Plants and fresh cut flowers are available, and some vendors will even create a lei for you on the spot.
The market is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You'll find it at 275 West Ka'ahumanu Ave. in Kahului, Maui.
The market offers fresh, locally grown produce in addition to products such as fresh juices, organic bread, macadamia nut spreads, vegan sushi and more. You'll also find non-food items like handmade jewelry and hair clips that make great, easy-to-pack souvenirs. As you browse through the market, enjoy live Hawaiian music.
Visit the Napili Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. You'll find it at 4900 Honoapiilani Highway in West Maui, near Maui Preparatory Academy.
You probably don’t normally associate a farmers market with a swap meet, but Maui Swap Meet will change that. This unique location features plenty of produce and plants, in addition to jewelry, clothes and other items. Take home local spices, homemade tropical jams and jellies, bananas, avocado, coconuts, greens, potted plants and more. You can refresh yourself with some sweet coconut water served with a straw while you browse.
The swap meet is open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Uh Maui College in Kahului, Maui. Admission is 50 cents for those 13 and up.
